The Cost of Earplugs
Monday, May 4, 2009 at 03:30AM The other day I was thinking about ear plugs and what they cost. Usually they range from about $1 to upwards of $30 for one pair of plugs, less if you buy in bulk. I'm loosing the dang things all the time but because we have a huge box of them in my garage it's no big deal. Ear plugs are something that we spend $30 or so once a year, if that.
To take a temporary detour from ear plugs I want to talk about diamond earings. They have a two things in common with ear plugs; they are small and are used with the ears. However, I have rarely heard (haha) of anyone loosing a pair of diamond earings. Yes it happens but very rarely.
This brings me to my point. If ear plugs were priced as much as diamond earings people probably wouldn't buy them, but if they did then they would most likely buy only one pair in their entire lifetime. What had me thinking about the plugs is actually the opposite end of the spectrum. If ear plugs cost $0.50 instead of $1 then when I lost a pair I would feel like I lost less and in turn would be more prone to loosing additional pairs in the future. If I got in the habit of loosing/tossing ear plugs then in the long run I might end up going through more sets than I normally would. If the price was reduced by half, and in my price=quality mind (for this example only) they were worth less and I were to consume over double what I used to then the ear plug company would be making more money with a less expensive product!
Just a thought.
